United in Exile: Black Universities and Jewish Refugee Scholars during the Holocaust

As Jewish academics desperately looked to escape Nazi-controlled Europe, they were faced with deeply entrenched anti-Semitism that made asylum in America unbelievably difficult to obtain. Unlike most academic institutions at the time, historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) saved the lives of 50 German Jewish scholars, hiring them when no other American academic institutions would. Using this extraordinary moment in history as a framework, this interactive workshop will explore the deep connection between the Black and Jewish American communities during the WWII era and the Civil Rights movement.
